Prevention Through
Education Created in 1991 as a result of the kidnaping and murder of seven year old Leticia Hernandez in Southern California, KinderVision is a child safety education program dedicated to the protection of children from those who would harm them. Developed with the assistance of law enforcement and research including an interview with a convicted child killer, the KinderVision video is designed to be an ongoing resource for families to use in their home to teach children how to be safe when not with their parents. The program, available in English and Spanish, is funded solely through corporate sponsorships and contributions which makes the video free to the families attending KinderVision events. At the event, families are provided with a free KinderVision child safety education video narrated by law enforcement that enables families to instruct their children on circumstances to avoid and to reinforce ways to protect their children from harm. Children are recorded on the end of the safety education message so they enjoy watching it and thus learn the material contained in it more easily. State and local law enforcement agencies and local fire departments are invited to participate with their family information programs and events are staffed with local law enforcement explorer groups whenever possible. Aimed at preventing child abductions and child exploitation, the KinderVision video is used by schools, youth groups, and law enforcement, in addition to families. An additional element is the KinderVision on air safety
education campaign, which is a series of educational messages taken from
the KinderVision child safety video that are
broadcast through local media affiliates and are designed to reach the
general population with this valuable safety information. |
“Education is the key to prevention and KinderVision is a first rate educational program. " -
John Marinez, California Highway Patrol - “I am an officer with the Louisville Metro Police
Department. I’ve seen a lot of crime prevention programs for kids.
This is by far one of the most useful programs to educate and prevent
potential problems with child safety. Keep up the good work. "
- Officer Connie Fraction - “The Chicago Police Dept. has much work in all
of our neighborhoods. Kids are the future so we’ll need to share
this video w/’em too! " - J. Flores, Chicago Police Dept - |
